random connection to long forgotten facts
scraps of thoughts deep within my consciousness
triggered by a word, a conversation,
music, talk on the radio,
the gust of wind this morning on the walk to school
with the girls, the whiff of smoke of a fall fire
in the fireplace, the smell of coffee, of food baking
the feel of a bit of bark, of the wet grounds in the trash
each a means of exploding neural pathways
of sudden burst of thought, or energy
weaving together that which was hidden deep down
with the instant now, the unique moment in the present
tying something in my unconscious, to long ago
to see the relationship of something today
with some deeper meaning, awareness
grasp of thought

October 29, 2007 1:17pm
I came across the text string “exploding neural pathways”
via Google at the site:
http://toomuchinformationplease.blogspot.com/
(Too Much Information !!*@!: Yes).
The poem above came from my own thoughts on that phrase

This morning, that spring morning light,
something special, magical, the low dim, soft light
illumining the treetops, the nascent buds, the flowers
translucent, glowing a cherry red, burnt orange highlights
a warming sun, not yet hot, awaking the forest, the woods
just off the highway, still visible into the thin groves
before the summer leaves block the view
the spring morning light, washing through,
more than filtered light, shining spotlight still
down to the forest floor, all the woods awash, bathed
in that wondrous spring morning light

There was symmetry, balance
in the telling of the story around the fire
of the connection of the four races
to the four elements – fire, water, air, and earth
of the way we are bound to the elements,
to each other, in harmony
the telling of the white people, bound to fire,
the sources of innovation, of modern life.
Of the black peoples, connected to water,
the source of life, the ability to find water
in the arid desert. The yellow people,
masters of the air, home of kites and wind.
And the red peoples, tied to the earth,
mother of us all. How wonderful the telling
of the story of us, in the binding one to the other
elements and peoples, in balance in the natural order
the way of things on the earth, on Turtle Island

It was a slaughter
all those of an age
all under two years old
put to death
to assuage the fears of the king
to rest his troubled mind
to give him peace
from a future foretold in scripture
for the people of the book
the nation of covenant
the people of the word
He was ready
to follow the model of Pharaoh
and kill the children
to save him from the king
born in the manger

For he couldn’t have a new king
a king of the prophesy,
not on his watch, in his time
He who was a pawn, a marionette, a puppet
a pawn of Rome, holding power
from afar, not by the grace, the covenant
the legacy, progeny of David,
the rightful line, as promised by God,
anointed by the prophets
A new king, emergent, fulfilling the law
the prophets, terrifying for the blasphemers,
the imposters, the usurpers
of the ordained rulers
of the covenant people
How far he would go
to subjugate his people
for a little longer in power

Second stanza added January 12, 2008
December 31, 2007
Matthew 2:13-23
based on sermon,
“Homecoming”, by
the Reverend Lori Eldredge,
Wesley United Methodist Church,
Concord, NH, 12/30/07
and Exodus 1:8-22

A prayer hidden and silent
Stones submerged by winter’s blanket
Covered and cold beneath the grip of frost

If they could but speak of the wishes, the hopes,
Desires and fears uttered here
Frozen in the gossamer of time

Wishes written on the footfalls and on the breezes
Of another moment, another season
Hearts open in the stillness of the walking
The mix of stones and soil, moss and grass under foot

Reverent periods of reflection
Between man and God
Cries heard in the silence beyond the field
Through the frozen prayers
In the ground.

1/4/06 11:00
Written about the prayer labyrinth behind Bow Mills United Methodist Church, covered by two storms of snow. Not all of the stones are covered; but there are no footprints, only a set of snowshoes tracks around the field in which the labyrinth lies when I checked this morning.

Up ahead
To my right
Around the point before me
A burst of squawks and the
Beating of heavy wings
Filled the air

The head and then the long endless body
Rose before me
Right over
The spine of my canoe
The heron
Blocking my vision

No more than ten feet above
My open jaw
And transfixed eyes.
It flew toward me
Thwump, thwump
I heard the wings breaking the
Early morning stillness around me

The majestic bird
Cupped its sails
And hovered for a moment,
Or a lifetime,
Directly above my right shoulder

Each feather was visible -
Rust, cream, slate,
And light blue eye shadow.

The feet and legs stretched behind
Tows pointed to cut through the air

My head rolled backward to watch
The bird fly off
Across the lake
